Delusions are firmly held false beliefs that persist despite clear evidence to the contrary and are not explained by a person’s cultural or religious background. Delusions can take many forms, such as the belief that one is being persecuted, having special powers or importance, that external forces are controlling one’s thoughts or behaviors, or even more bizarre beliefs such as that someone has removed an organ from your body without any evidence of the procedure. Unlike misunderstandings or mistaken ideas, delusions are often resistent to logical reasoning or facts. They are often associated with psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia or delusional disorder, mood disorders, such as bipolar, or neurocognitive disorders, such as dementia.
