Anxiety is an emotional and physiological response to a perceived threat or stressor. It can feel like worry and nervousness. Often used interchangeably with fear, anxiety is typically more future-oriented and focused on a diffuse threat whereas fear is more present-oriented and a reaction to a clearly identifiable threat. Anxiety can affect the mind (trouble focusing, constant worry, racing thoughts) and body (racing heart, muscle tightness, changes in body temperature). While anxiety is a normal and natural response, it can become problematic when it is excessive, distressing, and significantly impacts one’s daily life such as school, work or relationships.
