Skin picking, also known as excoriation disorder or dermatillomania, is a body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB) characterized by the recurrent picking of the skin, often leading to sores, scarring, infections, or significant tissue damage. It is often misunderstood as a “bad habit,” but it is a complex mental health condition that involves emotional regulation difficulties and compulsive behavior patterns. Skin picking can occur in response to stress, anxiety, boredom, or tactile triggers (like bumps or perceived imperfections), but may also arise during moments of focus, fatigue, or even relaxation.
