Sensory integration disorder, also known as sensory processing disorder, is a psychological and neurological condition where the brain has trouble organizing and responding to information from the senses. People with this disorder may be overly sensitive to certain stimuli, like loud noises or scratchy clothing, or they may not respond enough, seeming unaware of sensations like pain or temperature. This can cause confusion, discomfort, or distress in everyday situations and may lead to behavioral challenges, anxiety, or difficulty with attention and coordination. Sensory integration disorder is especially common in children and often overlaps with conditions like autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. Although it is not officially listed as a separate diagnosis in some medical manuals, many therapists and specialists recognize it as a real and impactful issue that can benefit from targeted support and intervention.
