Self-criticism is the tendency to negatively evaluate oneself and focus on perceived flaws, mistakes, and shortcomings. Individuals who engage in chronic self-criticism tend to over-emphasize their flaws or mistakes and have difficulty accepting or recognizing achievements or positive qualities. They may blame themselves for situations that they have little control over, dwell on past failures or perceived inadequecies, set unrealistic standards for themselves, and experience shame, guilt, or reduced self worth.
