Gender dysphoria is the distress or discomfort a person may feel when their gender identity doesn’t align with their body, social roles, or how others perceive them. This misalignment can be with the features or experiences associated with their sex assigned at birth and/or associated gender roles. It can involve emotional, mental, or physical unease and may be triggered by things like being misgendered, experiencing puberty, or societal gender expectations. Individuals experiencing gender dysphoria can be subject to health care issues, comorbid mental health challenges (including anxiety, depression, and suidical ideation), discrimation, and challenges with experiencing social support. While gender dysphoria is often diagnostically associated with trans and nonbinary individuals, many people can experinece gender dysphoria symptoms, and not all trans and nonbinary individuals themselves experience gender dysphoria.
