Depression is a common but serious medical condition that consists of a negative affect state which can range from discontent to despondency. When this negative affect state impacts our physical, cognitive, and social abilities, it can significantly impair functioning and interfere with one’s daily life. Depression can present through a variety of symptoms, including, but not limited to: fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness, low mood, diminished interest or pleasure in activities, significant weight loss or weight gain, insomnia or hypersomnia, difficulties concentrating, and thoughts of death. When a person experiences five or more of the above symptoms during one 2-week period, they should seek assessment for Major Depressive Disorder.
