Enuresis occurs when it is difficult to hold urine, resulting in accidents. Enuresis can occur during the day, at night, or both. Nighttime accidents are very common in young children and are usually eventually outgrown. Around 10% of 7 year old children have nighttime accidents. When enuresis negatively impacts someone’s life, speaking with a medical professional first can help determine cause of accidents. In the case of bed-wetting, changes to routine, like avoiding drinking later in the evening or using alarm systems (sensors that detect moisture and wake the child with a gentle alarm or vibration) can be effective. Addressing worries that contribute to holding urine can also meaningfully support children in making regular bathroom use part of their routine.
