Nightmares are commonly referred to as “bad dreams” in which distressing emotions may be evoked, such as sadness, anxiety and/or fear. An individual experiencing a nightmare typically can recall it vividly the next morning. Night terrors are similar to nightmares, but are more upsetting or disturbing, and an individual experiences more intense emotions. Individuals usually have little to no memory of night terrors. Night terrors are more common in young children and may involve sudden thrashing, screaming, crying or sitting up in bed.
