Selective mutism is a condition in which a child or adolescent consistently does not speak in certain social settings, such as at school or in public, despite being able to speak comfortably in other environments, like at home. This pattern is not due to a language or communication disorder and typically interferes with social, educational, or daily functioning. Children with selective mutism may communicate through gestures, facial expressions, or nonverbal means in situations where speech is expected.
