Perfectionism is a tendency to set exceedingly high standards and spend a significant amount of time trying to prevent mistakes. It is often accompanied by critical self-evaluations and concerns regarding others’ judgments. While striving for excellence can be motivating, perfectionism becomes maladaptive when it leads to chronic dissatisfaction, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. It manifests in three primary forms: self-oriented perfectionism (imposing high standards on oneself), other-oriented perfectionism (expecting perfection from others), and socially prescribed perfectionism (perceiving external pressures to be perfect) . This tendency is associated with various psychological, interpersonal, and achievement-related difficulties.
