Executive functioning deficits refer to difficulties a person may have with the processes that help us plan, organize, and regulate our thoughts and actions. These processes include working memory, self-control, emotional regulation, motivation, planning and problem solving, and self-awareness. Deficits in these functions can impact many aspects of daily life, such as work, school, and relationships. A person with deficits in executive functioning may struggle to stay on task, leading to difficulties completing chores or schoolwork. They may forget what they were doing after being distracted, leading to many half-finished projects or unanswered emails. Emotional regulation may also be affected, leading to difficulty managing stressors. Additionally, planning for large-scale or long-term goals may also be especially challenging.
