Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) is a pediatric mood disorder characterized by recurrent temper outbursts—verbal or behavioral—that are disproportionate to the situation, occurring at least three times per week for over a year, accompanied by a persistently irritable, angry, or depressed mood most of the day on most days in multiple settings (e.g., home, school, with friends) The first-line treatment for DMDD is psychotherapy involving parent training, as well as education about coping skills for both parents and kids. Medications like stimulants, antidepressants, and atypical antipsychotics may be used for severe or persistent symptoms. Therapy and medication can help improve child and family well-being.
