Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is an evidence-based treatment designed to help individuals reduce or eliminate chronic pain that is not primarily caused by ongoing tissue damage, such as certain types of back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, or other persistent pain conditions. This type of pain in sometimes referred to as functional, neuroplastic, or nociplastic pain. It is grounded in neuroscience and focuses on the brain’s role in generating and maintaining pain signals. PRT helps individuals identify and change learned pain responses by addressing fear, stress, and unhelpful beliefs about pain, while building a sense of safety in the body. Treatment typically includes education about pain, guided experiential exercises, and skills to respond differently to pain sensations. The goal is to decrease pain intensity and distress, improve functioning, and help individuals regain confidence in their bodies.
