Frequently Asked Questions

The Accelerated Outpatient Program (AOP) at The Concord Center is designed by our clinicians to rapidly address anxiety and OCD in ways standard weekly therapy cannot. Here’s what sets our program apart:

Accelerated, Real-Life Exposure: Unlike typical therapy sessions limited to the clinician’s office, our intensive program involves multiple weekly sessions combined with structured, supervised exposure exercises. Our clinicians actively support teens in real-world settings — at home, school, or public spaces. Therapeutic lessons can translate into meaningful real-life experiences.

Parallel Parent Guidance: We integrate parent guidance alongside adolescent treatment. This dual-track approach equips parents with strategies to reinforce therapeutic gains at home so that lasting change occurs within the family.

Dedicated and Consistent Care Team: Each family benefits from a specialized treatment team: an adolescent therapist, a parent therapist, and an exposure coach. This dedicated team remains consistent and collaborates throughout the program, ensuring personalized, coordinated, comprehensive care.

Fully Individualized Treatment: While The Concord Center values the power of group therapy, our AOP focuses on individualized care without mandatory group participation. Adolescents can build their confidence then successfully transition into recommended group therapy following program completion.

Optional Expert Medication Consultation: For those interested, our program offers optional medication consultation with psychiatrist Dr. Holly Peek, a board-certified specialist in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. Dr. Peek’s expertise in anxiety, OCD, and mood disorders provides an additional, research-backed option for care tailored to each participant’s needs.

Yes, optional consultations with our psychiatrist, Dr. Holly Peek can be arranged, but medication isn’t mandatory.

The initial program duration is 4 weeks, with an option to extend up to 4 additional weeks if needed. Teens meet in-person with their individual therapist three times weekly — two 50-minute sessions and one 80-minute session — and with their exposure coach once weekly for 80 minutes. Teen sessions typically occur during daytime hours, around 1 or 2 pm.

Parents meet with their parent coach 2 times per week for 50-minutes. These sessions can be held in-person or virtually.

Teens are required to attend individual therapy appointments in-person, at our office in Concord, MA. Parent sessions can be held virtually for one or both parents to accommodate work and family schedules.

No. Teens meet individually with their therapist and exposure coach for all AOP appointments. After completing the program, we recommend and encourage participants to consider our group treatment options, including our Social Anxiety Group for teens.

Schools are usually able to accommodate students’ early dismissal to access the therapy they need. We can provide a doctor’s note stating the medical necessity of the treatment. Adults can consider applying for Paid Family Medical Leave to manage work missed due to program participation or driving their teen to appointments.

The AOP is a self-pay program. Our AOP fee schedule can be found in your intake packet, though we can send it to you in advance upon request. Payment for the four weeks is expected at the start of treatment. For families with out-of-network behavioral health insurance benefits, most of the services provided can be submitted for reimbursement, as allowed by your health plan.

We provide both a paid invoice for all services rendered as well as a “super bill,” which includes all necessary procedural and diagnostic codes needed to submit to insurance companies. To make our services accessible, we also offer a sliding-scale fee structure. Families can apply through a straightforward process that ensures the scale is applied fairly to everyone.

After completing your inquiry form, we’ll get back to you within 2 business days. A screener will contact you to see if you’re a good fit for the program or will recommend a different program that would best fit your needs. In most cases, AOP starts about a month after submitting the inquiry form.

Absolutely. Starting group therapy early can provide valuable coping strategies while waiting for individual openings.

We recognize that many teens and adults with anxiety or OCD may also experience other challenging symptoms. Having additional symptoms — such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm urges or behaviors, or psychosis — doesn’t automatically exclude participation. However, we carefully evaluate these concerns to determine if they might significantly interfere with anxiety or OCD treatment. In some cases, we may recommend addressing these symptoms first before starting the Accelerated Outpatient Program.

We make transitioning to less frequent therapy sessions as smooth as possible, providing all necessary documentation to your new or previous therapist.

No, for two main reasons: first, AOP clinicians must reserve time for future AOP participants on top of their existing caseloads. Second, we encourage participants to take ownership of their growth by transitioning to a previous or new therapist.

Early in the program, we discuss discharge plans, which may include starting with another clinician at The Concord Center for outpatient therapy if needed.

We encourage everyone to reach out — even if you’re unsure. If this accelerated program isn’t the ideal match, we’ll help you find the best therapy option to meet your needs within or outside our practice. Your well-being is our priority, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
